If you asked anyone what the worst part of moving was, they’d probably tell you it’s the packing. It takes a long time, it’s a lot of work, and it’s just plain exhausting. Thankfully, there are ways you can create a more pleasant packing experience for your move.
Here are eight packing tips that we consider to be the best ways to pack for moving:
1. Create a checklist
Being organized by creating a checklist is a great way to ensure you’re not missing anything, and that everything will be done on time. You’ll also be less stressed seeing that you’re getting through all the packing. Plus, who doesn’t love crossing tasks off a list?
2. Declutter your house
Just starting somewhere can really be overwhelming. You’re looking at all the things in your home just to realize just how much stuff you’ve accumulated over the years. Decluttering by getting rid of all that junk that’s just taking up space is the best way to get started. It’s faster than actually packing anything, and it means you’ll have even less stuff to pack later on!
3. Don’t procrastinate
It’s so tempting to leave absolutely everything to the last minute. I mean, why pack today when you can pack twice as much tomorrow? And then so on and so forth until you’ve left all the packing to complete in one or two days. Instead, weeks ahead of the moving date, set a one-hour timer on your phone and just pack something. Then do that every day. That work will quickly add up to a lot being packed, and it won’t have been so exhausting to accomplish.
4. Don’t overpack your boxes
While it may seem right to fit as much as physically possible into every box your packing, that’s just going to be more work down the line. Pack your boxes so that they’re a comfortable weight to carry. This will ensure an easy move. To help with this, make sure you’re-packing heavier things in smaller boxes, and lighter things in bigger boxes.
5. Don’t leave empty space in your boxes
While it’s bad to overpack your boxes, it’s also bad to just leave empty spaces in them. If you do that, things are bound to move around and crash into each other while on the road, and that’s going to end up with some broken belongings. If you’ve reached a good weight in a box but there’s still space, add fillers like bubble wrap and tissue paper.
6. Use stuff you already have to help with packing
There are plenty of objects you have around your house that can help you with the packing process, leaving you with fewer boxes to pack in the end. Got baskets or hampers? Use those as boxes. Towels are perfect for wrapping around fragile objects, such as glasses and plates. The pots you have that will take up a ton of space in their boxes can also be filled with smaller objects.
7. Label your boxes
This does take a bit of extra time, but labeling your boxes is absolutely worth it! Knowing what room each box should go in and what’s in each box will make the move and unpacking so much easier. If you don’t want to write it all down, you also have the option of taking a picture of the box’s contents and then taping that picture to the outside of the box.
8. Keep the essentials nearby
In your rush to get absolutely everything in your house packed, you may end up packing things you wish you hadn’t. Instead, be proactive and have an easily accessible bag for essentials. Stuff like medicine, toiletries, and some clothing will be good to pack in here. That way, you’ll have everything you need in easy access during and after your move. Planning on moving sometime soon?
