Dimensional Shingles

Because they are affordable, asphalt shingles are the most popular type of roofing material in America. Asphalt shingles roofs can be attractive and affordable, and come in a variety of styles and colors. One of the problems with shingles was the monotonous or boring appearance that caused all the roofs on the block to look identical. Thanks to dimensional shingles, those days are gone.

Dimensional shingles are also called architectural or laminated and are asphalt shingles that have a twist. Laminated shingles are also called “architectural” and “dimensional” shingles. Their thickness and depth give them a look that is more similar to slate or wood shakes. Regular asphalt shingles are made with three asphalt tabs that are evenly spaced. This gives the roofing material a repetitive pattern. Dimensional shingles are made up of two layers of shingle material that have been bonded together. Random notches have been removed from the shingle to expose the bottom layer. These shingles now have a three-dimensional appearance with different high tabs and low tabs.

Dimensional shingles offer greater protection against hail and wind due to the double-bonded layer. The heaviest grades can withstand winds up to 120 mph. They have a 40 year average lifespan, compared to the 20-year average for single-layer asphalt shingles. These shingles can be used on all roof pitches and types, just like regular asphalt shingles. Dimensional shingles are also more attractive and required by many communities.

Dimensional shingles have some cons. The dimensional shingles are slightly more costly – the average cost of a double layer is 20% more. They may also be more susceptible than others to mildew or algae because of the notches. All asphalt shingles are susceptible due to the organic material within the shingle, which is one mold’s favorite food.
